Do you have a household move looming on the horizon?

Moving your possessions from one home to another can be a time filled with stress and uncertainties. One way to lessen the stress, and cut down on the unknowns is to create a Moving Checklist. Here are some tips to get you started.

While still in your old location, do the following

Two to Three Months Ahead of Time; Decide whether you’re going to hire movers, or if you’ll be doing the work yourself. Call potential movers or truck rental companies well ahead of your scheduled moving day, especially if you’re moving in peak times. The last day of the month, particularly the summer months, and weekends are always a busy time for both. Hiring a moving company mid month in the dead of winter may save you a few dollars. If you’re blessed with friends and family who can help, make sure that you have someone licensed to drive a truck of the size you’ll be renting.

Two Months Ahead of Time; Take an inventory of your household. Since there’s no point in moving stuff you no longer want, go through each room and decide if you’re going to keep it or toss it. You may want to consider holding a yard sale if you have a lot of stuff you no longer want that’s still in good condition. Alternatively, donate it to a local thrift store or crisis center. After your cleanout, get together all you moving supplies such as boxes, packing tape, markers, newspapers and bubble wrap.

Time to Pack; It can be a seemingly daunting task to pack up your entire life, but it needn’t be. If you spend a bit of time every day, it won’t seem nearly so bad! Start by packing up those things that you know you won’t need in the next two months. If it’s the middle of the summer then winter clothes are a great place to start and vice versa. Label each box with a description of the contents and the room it should be placed in at your new location. Keep track of boxes that contain valuables in case your insurance company requires it. You should call your insurance company to guarantee a smooth policy transfer from the old location to the new in addition to coverage while your goods are in transit, though your moving company will likely have coverage for this.

One Month Ahead of Time; It’s time to arrange for the disconnection at your old location and connection at your new location for the following; gas or oil, water, electricity, cable tv, internet and telephone. Inform the following of your change of address (a lot of this can be done online); credit card companies, doctor, dentist, other medical, your bank, insurance company.

Two Weeks Before Moving; Call your moving company or truck rental agency and confirm your reservation. Do so again a few days before your move. It pays to double check because without this service, you’re going nowhere and you risk having all your stuff stashed on the front lawn while the new owner moves in.

A Few Days Before the Move; To make it as easy as possible for the movers or those helping you, print out a detailed map and directions to your new location. Include your cell phone number so that they can get in touch with you on the day. Pack a suitcase with the things you and your family will need over the next several days such as clothing, hygiene and grooming products and medication.

Before You Surrender the Keys; Do a final walk through of the entire house. Look in all the closets and check all built in shelving and drawer units to ensure you’ve left nothing behind. Don’t forget the shed and the garage!
