This concept of specialized knowledge, comes up frequently. And one of the biggest tics I have is that, “You don’t understand it.”
Hmmph. “That’s my thing-humor me”, I say.
But it’s true - the majority of people who read the chapter 4 on “Specialized Knowledge” straight through, including some pretty heaver hitters on the seminar circuit, flat misunderstand it.
And it’s true for the most part - meaning that what I’m normally saying is, “Hey, you need the specialized knowledge of the rich. You don’t need a lot of specialized knowledge. You need to be able to organize people who have specialized knowledge.”
Today, however, let’s talk just a little bit about specialized knowledge, and the fact that you actually do need some specialized knowledge. You do need to have a skillset, a profession, a concept-a niche, which is the word we use most frequently in my profession. So yes, develop your niche, develop your expertise.
Hey, listen, a bread store is not a stereo store. Can it be any simpler than that? You’re in a specific business. You need to and want to develop and have expertise in that business. But I go back; I’m saying you can’t do it by yourself.
Honestly, you do need to be able to use the common business tools of today.
That being said, what you can do by yourself is a mockery of what you can do with others, what you can earn from others. Remember, employees are in the business of selling their services at the lowest price that we, as employers, have to pay them. It’s the lowest price we have to pay them.
But the whole thing is to acquire the specialized knowledge you need. Sure, you can be an expert in your field, don’t worry about stuff that’s outside your field, and acquire other people on your MasterMind team who can help you achieve the riches that you desire!
You see, the chapter, exactly as Napoleon Hill himself first published it in 1937, ends with the words…
“Remember, the IDEA is the main thing. Specialized knowledge may be found just around the corner - any corner!”
This hardly sounds like the trumpet of a person advocating more specialized education and a deeper study of a profession.
University professors, though they have much prestige in the little world they’ve decided to fit into, don’t make much money. Yet who could be more highly educated?
No, it’s not “owning” the specialized knowledge you need to put plans into profitable operation that’s so important… It’s “directing” them.
First, you must have a good IDEA, a plan, something that can benefit a lot of people. THAT is the specialized knowledge of the rich - to generate a good, profitable idea, to get it into motion and effectively to market, and to wisely invest the proceeds for your future years.
With that, it’s rather easy to round up the talent to execute it.
And when it comes to talent, remember, there’s loads of talent - and though they want as much as they can get, they’re bidding in a competitive market.
So few people are like you… Idea people. Do what you do best.
That’s where the outstanding rewards are.
