Anybody could have seen the negatives to building a theme park in the middle of Florida swampland. Why would anybody in their right mind have a mouse as a mascot? Nobody lives in the middle of Florida. Who’s going to go to the park? Oranges? People won’t travel from other states. Would you buy a house for say $300,000 and then spend another $300,000 on making it livable? Southern unions are highly political and will make your life miserable. The time isn’t right. Wasn’t Disneyland good enough?

Thankfully for all of us, that’s not how Walt Disney lived his life or operated his company.

I think you get my drift. It’s easy to be negative. It’s easy to focus on the past and not think about the future or even the present. There’s no pain this way, no heartache.

Walt Disney was never someone to focus on what wasn’t possible. He focused on what was possible and lived an incredible life of accomplishment. If he couldn’t get something done the way he wanted it done, he’d find someone who could.

Reading the book I quickly came to the conclusion that while Walt was a genius and a visionary, he was an extremely hard worker. Nothing could get in his way. Once he had it in his mind, he was unstoppable. He would find a way. If there was no path then he would blaze it. From his Oscar to his never duplicated theme parks, his visions of the future came true for the most part.

My neighbor saw only the negatives. “Why couldn’t the unions just do what they agreed to do”? “Why were some of the contractors employed so unethical?” I would have given up early on. I’d have no stomach for that BS” “How do you put up with those shenanigans?”

I had no answer for him other than to say that I admired Walt’s vision, persistence, passion, and perseverance.

Like Disney, I saw no advantage in focusing on the negative. Where does it get you if you do?

My friend persisted. “I could never take such a chance! Can you believe all the problems they had with getting the attractions up and running? Who knew the rides could be so dangerous, even fatal at times? That’s irresponsible!”

It was Louis Pasteur who said: “In the field of observation, chance favors the prepared mind.”
