I live in Calgary Canada the population is just over 1 million and the city has grown immensely in the last 7 years. With a city of this size that has been growing this fast the traffic has become much worse over the years. That being said I never complain about the traffic and here’s why.
I visit Toronto Canada on a fairly regular basis in comparison Toronto has over 4.5 million people and is nestled against Lake Ontario one of the largest fresh water lakes on the planet. Because of the water the traffic from down town can only go North, West and East and can’t go south.
Because of the immense traffic Toronto has one of the largest highway systems in North America, the famous 401 highway at some points has 16 lanes across and because of Toronto I never complain about the traffic in my city.
I have been on the 401 on a Sunday night and the traffic is sometimes bumper to bumper. Now that is bad traffic!
Next are the outskirts of New York City. The highway that connects the New Jersey to New York is 32 lanes wide in one spot. I was on this highway again on a Sunday, this time it was in the afternoon and the traffic stopped. You really have to see it to believe it. 32 lanes across, 16 lanes a side and here we were stopped. It was a parking lot.
Another city that has been given the title as the worst city to drive in, in the world is Sau Palo. Brazil. There are over 25 million people there and the traffic is horrible. The traffic has been graciously referred to as though New York threw up on Los Angeles.
For the wealthy of Brazil the only way to get around is by helicopter. The traffic is so bad every office building has a working helipad to whisk away the elite of Sau Palo.
While Sau Palo is truly one of the worst cities in the world there are others that come close. Bangkok Thailand, Cairo Egypt, Calcutta India and Beijing China. What is really concerning are the cities in Asia that are covering rivers and canals so they add more lanes of traffic. Bangkok for example has done this blindly and now during the rainy season the city floods for months because of their lack of planning.
It is really sad that we live in a world where proper drinking and sewer systems come second to the roads for cars and trucks. We have really gone in the wrong direction if you ask me.
For many reasons and mostly because of Toronto, New York, Sau Palo and all of the Asian cities I never complain about the traffic in my city!
