Spotting water damage in the home might not always be so easy is you can not see it. Even if you know there is a water problem somewhere, good lighting should still be used to make a repair. If you are doing a home inspection, you must have good lighting to be able to spot small issues easily. If you have leaking going on somewhere when it rains, after the rain stops the spot can dry up and it might take the lace getting wet and drying up quite a few times before any clear damage is really visible. These are places you need to be able to spot before damage like rotting and mold can begin. The sooner you locate a leak the less it is likely to cost you to repair it.
One specific place it can be difficult to find water damage is in an attic. Some attics will have windows and some will not. Depending on whether or not your attic is already lit well enough to see clearly will determine how much lighting you will need to check things out really well. While it is raining is one of the very best times to inspect an attic for roof leaks that are already making their way into the home. When the water is leaking in from the roof during the rain, it is much easier to follow the leak directly to the source. Sometimes even when you locate a place in an attic where the water is accumulating, people will usually assume that it is coming from directly overhead, but this is not always the case.
A leak can begin where there is a loose or missing shingle of the roof, but the eater can travel from that place and end up actually run along attic beams or ply wood to an entirely different location. With proper lighting you should be able to follow the leak to where it originated from. When you find it you can mark the spot so that when it dries you will be able to find it again when you want to have the repair done, which should be as soon as possible. Always look closely for signs of mold with a strong light. It might be hard to spot if it is in early stages of development.
In the basement, crawlspace, or under cabinets are all places that can be dimly lit or not lit at all. You should use good lighting when conducting inspections in these places too. Since these are areas where leaking is common and mold and rotting often begin, you do not want to miss anything. When and if you find a water issue that attention, you should be able to determine whether or not you can make the repair yourslef or if you perhaps need to call in a water damage professional.
